Throughout your life, circumstances will change you as a person. However, professionally, you need passion and initiation to grow. As John Maxwell once said, “Change is inevitable; growth is optional.” You can change with the wind and evolve into a personality that has made the effort to grow.

Personal development allows us to learn new abilities, overcome obstacles, and accomplish previously unattainable goals. Continuous improvement in the workplace results in an increased ability to grow, solve challenges, and adjust well to market needs.

In this article, we’ll be exploring many elements of change and the ways they impact many aspects of our lives. Each element has a certain effect on the way we respond to different sectors like organizations, personal life, and the global economy.

What is Change?

Change is an umbrella term for a systematic shift in many aspects of and within our lives. Due to certain circumstances, we develop behavioral changes that can mold us into who we are as a person. Other times, after some introspection we try changing our less desirable behaviors to improve our emotional and physical well-being. Keep in mind that these behaviors can turn into habits that have a significant impact on our health.

Once we are able to bring change to ourselves, our environment is another element of our lives that is sensitive to change. Shifts in the environment can lead to many significant changes as well. Sometimes change in behavior can bring significant change in the environment as well. A small example is of a sustainable environment. If we change our behavior to care more about our environment, we can bring amazing change to it.

Systemic change encompasses the changing of a system to generate an effect that lasts. Systemic and systematic are terms that often overlap with each other.  However, it’s clear that systematic is the overall impact of a system, whereas systematic describes a deliberate approach inside a system.

Types of Change

Evolutionary Change

Evolutionary change is a type of change that takes its time. The phases of change are frequently so few that individuals affected do not notice the transition, or they do and can alter their work and processes incrementally. Evolutionary change might be intentional or unintentional. There’s a major example of such organizational change. It is the slow and gradual adjustment of Avon to women working a blue-collar job. The change wasn’t dramatic and took time until Avon noticed they were running out of “Avon ladies” and had to discover ways to do damage control.

Revolutionary Change

Revolutionary change, often known as frame-breaking change, is swift and spectacular. It can be considered as either planned or unplanned change. A planned revolutionary shift may result in major changes to an organization’s staffing, structure, or procedures.

Innovation can frequently result in revolutionary transformation within or without an organization. Innovative technology like the cell phone has caused revolutionary change in the industry, benefiting both those who manufacture the items (such as Apple and Samsung) and those who have had a hard time later on than at the beginning.

Key Elements of Change

  1. External Triggers:

One of the major driving forces of change is technology. As innovation strikes, digitalization takes root in many sectors of the economy. It has cemented itself in firms, educational institutes, and more. AI has brought apparent change within the market which has led to losses and profits all around.  Market demands have always been unpredictable. A slight change can have a huge impact on the economy which is another external trigger for change to arise. Global crises like COVID-19 have brought many changes into our world where we’ve learnt more towards remote learning and working. Our world is sensitive to crisis which makes it a significant trigger to change.

  1. Internal Factors:

When policies change and leaders are made, the superiors need to have a vision for growth. If they are driven towards dedication and growth, it easily becomes possible for change to occur. Organizational culture is another element that can bring change to its employees. It is an internal driving force for change to occur from within.

  1. Psychological Impact:

Change is inevitable but it has a psychological impact on the people who experience it. The way people perceive and interpret change determines how well they adjust to it. Some people might resist it due to the unnecessary shift it brings to their lives. Others might easily accept it simply because they’re adaptable to it. These psychological changes have a significant impact on the ways people react to change in their personal and professional lives.

  1. Time and Adaptability:

It is also important to note the timeframe within which change has occurred. Short-term change might be easier to adapt to while long-term change might need reevaluation and analysis to adjust to. This also has an impact on the outcomes that you’re targeting by bringing in that change.

Case Study

When it comes to successful change management, Microsoft’s successful transformation under CEO Satya Nadella (2014) comes to mind. She approached different strategies to take on the challenge. He brought a cultural shift within the organization by implementing ideas like ‘learn-it-all’ to help employees be more innovative and collaborative. He shifted Microsoft’s approach away from a focus on Windows and toward cloud computing, promoting Azure as the company’s future. This change capitalized on the rising demand for cloud services, establishing Microsoft as a market leader.

Nadella also expanded Microsoft’s ecosystem by making its products available on competitors’ platforms and supporting open-source development.

Conclusion

Change is unavoidable and needs to be addressed when brought in, naturally or deliberately. There are multiple models that can be used to deal with it. Some of them include Kotter’s model which focuses on urgency and creating coalitions. There are many elements of change that have an impact on our internal and external forces. It also has a psychological impact on people who experience it.

Reflect on your personal and professional lives and bring change where needed.
